Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate or opposite. Margins entire. Pinnately-veined or occasionally tripliveined. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in paniculate, racemose, or capitellate inflorescences. Flowers bisexual (perfect), small, usually aromatic, actinomorphic. Tepals 6, equal, usually arranged in whorls of 3, usually white, greenish white, or yellow, rarely reddish. Fertile stamens usually (3, 6) 9, outer 6 introrse, inner 3 extrorse and with 2 basal glands, staminodia present; filaments of Stamens of third whorl often with 2 stalked or sessile glands at base; anthers dithecal, opening by valves or small pores. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule 1, anatropous.

Fruit: Berry-like; entirely enclosed in the enlarged floral tube with only a small apical pore; endocarp and exocarp often bony and ribbed. Seeds without endosperm.
